Firsthand account of the TVA coal ash dam failureJust before Christmas, the true cost and danger of coal became apparent in the town of Harriman, Tennessee.
On the morning of December 22, the earthen dam at the Kingston Power Plant containing coal fly ash failed catastrophically, unleashing a six-foot wall of toxic water and mud.
By the time the flood subsided, more than a billion gallons of coal sludge had damaged 15 homes -- three beyond repair -- before pouring into the nearby Emory and Clinch rivers.
In comparison, the Exxon Valdez spilled a "mere" 11 million gallons of crude oil. And the coal fly ash spill in Harriman is three times larger than the October, 2000 coal sludge spill in Martin County, Kentucky, which the EPA called "the largest environmental disaster east of the Mississippi."
Miraculously, there were no human injuries in last week's spill. Yet the Emory and Clinch rivers flow into the Tennessee River -- the primary water source for many Tennessee towns and cities, including Chattanooga. Coal fly ash contains heavy metals including lead, mercury, arsenic, chromium, and selenium. And though it will take years for the full affect of this environmental disaster to be known, iLoveMountains.org has teamed with the Upper Watauga Riverkeeper and the Waterkeeper Alliance to test the waters's of the Clinch and Emory Rivers for contaminants. In short, the toxic coal ash spill at Harriman reveals what we've known all along -- there is no such thing as clean coal.
As Grist magazine points out, "there is no "clean coal" that doesn't produce millions of tons of toxic sludge, just as there is not yet any form of coal that doesn't send millions of tons of CO2 into the atmosphere."
Despite the spill at Harriman, TN, Big Coal and their lobbyists will be doing all they can in the coming year to convince decision makers in Washington that "clean coal" is the solution to America's foreign energy dependence. They'll do everything in their power to obfuscate the true cost of coal -- more than 470 mountains destroyed to date, thousands of miles of stream destroyed, and millions of pounds of toxic chemicals released into the environment and our nation's waters.
But we can beat these industry lobbyists -- and put an end to mountaintop removal coal mining in America -- if we keep up the pressure in the new year.

Greetings from Oklahoma

Greetings from Oklahoma! I just got off the plane last night. I was supposed to arrive here yesterday morning but the plane was delayed. for 4 hours because of bad weather. The place is so flat, I almost saw the next state when we landed in Tulsa. We had to fly on a plane so small. It was about the size of a helicopter. Tulsa doesn't have a big airport so they only use tiny planes. I thought that we ride a big plane to Cincinnati then switch to a small plane but we rode to small plane to both. I still don't know why we switched planes if both of them were the same size. Now I get to see my cousins Dena, Lara (Don't even think about it Josh), Lily, Ream, Zeyiad, and Mazen. The air is so much cleaner here. It feels wonderful to breathe fresh air. My Mom just came form her 7 hour shopping spree. gotta go.

Christmas Time

Hey guys, I know I haven't post anything 4 a while because, well there's not much 2 say. I hope u guys had a wonderful christmas. Plus, u guys should remember that christmas isn't just about getting presents, it's about being with your family/friends and giving to others. Christmas can be about celebrating other things 2. This year we celebrated my uncle's new house and the birth of my new cousin Aiden. It's also about coming together as a family. Even though it was only my parents, siblings, aunt, uncle, and 2 cousins in that house, we all wanted to be together as a family. Since my family is HUGE, they live in different places, california, north carolina, guam, chicago, and of course, the philippines. So we sat there in the living room until 2 AM singing carols, taking turns opening presents, and calling every single family member.
Presents r nice too but, u should think about others who don't recieve many presents or none at all. that's y all churches ask for present donations 2 give 2 kids who r homeless and don't have a lot of money. So i want all of u guys 2 enjoy the rest of ur winter break and have a happy new year.

Superstar's first ft(field trip)/others

So today team 8-2 went 2 gr8t falls 2 go hiking. 1st of all, it was more like rock climbing instead of hiking. there were so many rocks. we got 2 climb down a cliff and half the team, mostly girls, was so scared 2 climb down!!! we were there 4ever.anyways, the whole thing was so fun! it also was a very beautiful environment. there was a sign saying that the park contained over 20 "rare" species,I told michael that by "species" they ment plants. And i was so right, the largest animal we saw was a freakin turtle!!!!! There were lots of daddy longlegs(spider) in the park and we saw a walking stick.Amir,michael,and denise were in my group, ms.adamson said 2 stay with ur group and as suspected,amir,michael,and i got way ahead of denise. Anyways, the whole thing was one of the best field trips i've ever been 2! also on friday,ms.adamson showed us dis video that some 7th graders made from the ron clark academy about the debate and they made a rap. everyone in the class luved it so here it is, if u wanna see it on utube, search ron clark academy debate.

Team 8-2's twilight buzz/other info

hey guys I've barely seen jean in school, unfortunately, i see denise EVERYDAY! And afnan, i see u near my locker talking 2 the girls near my locker like syima,taniya, or abigail. Anyway, the students on 8-2 r suddenly talking about twilight, both the books and the movie. In advisory, a certain girl keeps talking about this one boy in the movie that is supposedly "cute". My la teacher has a poster of twilight in her classroom. The girl sitting next 2 me in science has a shirt 4 twilight. My civics teacher and other female teachers r going 2 see the movie together when it comes out. And apparantly some boys start 2 talk about it 2. Getting a little 2 wierd. So this one boy in mod 5 gym(not me,i'm in mod 4) called my civics teacher, Ms.Adamson[head of the national junior honors society(njhs)], sexy. This is a very,very,very,wierd school. And by the way the superstars are way better than the panthers, innovators(what does that mean?!?!?!), or I forgot the last one. Except 4 the fact that denise is on my team, my team is better than urs. And anyone who was on 6-4(the stars) would think dat superstars is a good name(even though i wasn't on that team), ask Darwin!! Well my 1st field trip is monday, were going hiking, michel and i r gonna ditch denise and leave him alone :) bye

Been Thinking

hey guys, do you know where u guys r going 4 field trips. I know that team 8-2, mine and denise's }=(, is going to go hiking, go inside the capital, and try 2 go 2 an amusement park or a zoo. I heard that team 8-4, darkprincess, is going 2 new york at the end of the school year (lucky)! I don't even know if this is true or not cause my ar teacher said u guys r going. So tell me about other field trips u guys r going 2.
So tell me what 1 or 2 colors u guys want in a new layout or post a picture of it with the link and I'll put it up.
And lastly Amir wants u guys 2 start calling moutaz(u guys know him right?) senor jalapeno. While moutaz wants u 2 spread around that denise got beat up and raped by an old lady. And during lunch 1 time, I found out that michael laughs when u say the word fruity in a wierd/funny way. And lastly get other ppl 2 read this blog, tell anyone u know! see ya at school.

driving

hey guys, it won't be that long until we get our driver's licence or our permit. Unlike some people who might never get their's (denise and bridgette). Although if they somehow get it, I am never going in a car with them. Denise and I were talking about age restrictions on driving. do u guys know what age u have 2 be to get ur licence or ur permit. I said ages 14-15 were for permits, while 16 or above are 4 the licence. Comment on that.
When we get our cars we need to remember certain rules and not hurt anything or anyone(denise). Rules like seatbelt, eyes on road, not eating while driving(DENISE), and let's not forget paying 4 insurance and gas. Make sure u always have gas in ur tank! Here's the new happyslip vid about driving and using a gps(sorta). BTW gps stands 4 global positioning system, not geographic philipino(should be filipino) system.

Another thing u need 2 wrry about is choosing a car. Especially 1 that u can afford! There r 2 kinds of car gears, automatic and stick shift. Automatic is easier. Here is kevjumba's vid he made with happyslip called put it in purse.

Hey guys, I'm going to a meeting in Richmond on wednesday and I even get to speak a bit there, so here is what i plan on saying and please tell me what you think

We are in one of the worst problems ever to face all humans. It is worse than every war that has ever happened. It is worse than the assasination of every great leader there ever was. Worse than the Great Deppression. Worse than all of those things combined. If we stay this way Earth will be gone, humans will be gone, everything we've ever known and loved will be gone. That is how serious global warming is. The problem is, no one is taking it serously, some people don't take it at all. Since the first person how ever spoke humans have been greedy, and lazy and had dreams of power, dreams of wealth, and riches untold, they had dreamed of being the best and better than all the rest. I'm pretty sure that all the kids today want to be high in power. Like the president, or an evil dictator who will rule the world. You all know about Adolf Hitler, and Napolean. Both had dreams of being the best, and they did everything they can to get what they wanted, and what they wanted was something that no 0ne could get no matter what, complete power over people. Hitler thought he could do that by anihalating everyone who opposed him, but soon, that would lead to everyone. That led to earth destroying inventions. The person who invented cars dreamed of being rich, I'm sure of that. People wanted to become rich, they were greedy.
The DC10 was an airplane that crashed in france and killed about 350 people. There were no survivors. The people who tested that plane ignored a failed door pressure test and that resulted in the worst air crash in history. Some people are so greedy, they would kill 350 people just for money. That aircrash proved that people were going way too far about money. That is why we are all here today, to show the world that money is not the most important thing in the world. In fact, it may be the least. That is why global warming is not stopping, and it will not stop until we learn the real value of money.

That is what I've got so far and I will make about two or three more posts continueing this speech. If you don't feel like picking up litter, or recycling, or worrying less about money, than I need to work more on this.

We were not making fun of your name. All we were doing is telling u what the websites said it meant!!! And I agree, I really won't miss certain people who were singing in Mandarin (wtf?). So anyway, TEMS is finally over and we can now relax 4 the rest of the summer. Although I like the fact that we were able 2 go 2 like 12 field trips in 1 month, unlike the regular school year when my team only went 2 3 field trips. So everyone just kick back, relax, and enjoy the summer. I mean, how can u not enjoy it. You-Know-Who isn't in our summer anymore (yay). So see ya in september. its actually scarier than it looks. The point is that Josh told me not to tell anyone that he screamed like a GIRL to any of his friends. True I told them not to tell anyone that I screamed like a girl too. That is the real story. And the other ride we went on was the Tony Hawk half pipe . I credit him for actually getting on the ride , because SOMEone in our group didn't even go one the ride. Here's the video of it :

Real story

In 6 flags, mohnish didn't come (yay), oh I mean boo =( . Well, Jean, Asad, Johnathan, and I were all screaming but certain people (Jean), were screaming more than others. U know what the pirate ship ride is, the one that goes side to side. Well, we were in the middle seats(safest spots) and Jean was screaming like CRAZY. This little girl ( about 6 years old) was sitting at the end of the boat, raising her hands, and screaming WHEEEEEEEE!! Jean was screaming AAAAAHHHHH!! At the flying carousel ride, Asad thought it was a baby ride but once it started spinning, he was screaming "I'm afraid of heights!!!!" That's what really happened at 6 flags!

P.S. don't believe Jean!!!!
